Legal Aid Society and Mental Health Coalition

The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland

The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland strives to secure justice, equity, and access to opportunity for all through legal representation and advocacy for systematic change. Founded in 1905, Legal Aid is the sole civil legal aid provider in Northeast Ohio and the fifth oldest legal aid organization in the US.

With support from the McGregor Foundation, Legal Aid has developed community legal education and outreach efforts that cover frequently encountered legal issues. Some of these efforts include expanding estate planning services to help seniors with advanced directives and will and deed preparation, ensuring their assets are protected. Additionally, Legal Aid recently hosted a “Know Your Rights” presentation on Kinship Care. There are currently over 7,600 adults in Cuyahoga County who are the sole caregivers for their grandchildren. Recognizing this need, Legal Aid supports older adults in care for minors by assisting with POAs, Caretaker Affidavits, and custody.

Finally, Legal Aid helps drive systematic change by amplifying community voices, especially those of seniors. Legal Aid has long worked with the tenants of St. Clair Place, a large apartment complex for low-income seniors, to advocate for improved housing conditions. Legal Aid recognizes that helping these tenants will not only improve their living conditions but could set new precedents for building across Cleveland.

The McGregor Foundation shares the Legal Aid Society of Cleveland’s commitment to assisting senior citizens by helping them protect their rights while maintaining a safe financial, social, and physical environment. We recognize the significant contributions of Legal Aid to Northeast Ohio and support Legal Aid as they continue to advocate for and create better conditions for our community.
