Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center

The Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center is a nonprofit dedicated to creating a community where everyone has equal access to information and communication services, and where all individuals’ communication choices are valued equally. Founded in 1921 by Helen Garfield, the CHSC is the oldest hearing and speech center in the United States, and northeast Ohio’s only nonprofit for those solely with special communication needs.

The CHSC offers aid in a variety of forms including hearing services, language interpreting, and speech-language and literacy. These programs are life changing for the individuals and families they touch.

Allison Nelson is a 65-year-old participant in the Audiology Patient Assistance Program which provides hearing aids and essential services to older adults who would otherwise be unable to afford them. Her words capture the life-changing impact of this program:

“My old hearing aids weren’t working anymore. The new ones are wonderful—I can have conversations with my family and friends again. I am retired and on a fixed income, and thanks to this program, I am able to participate in life. Not being able to hear is awful. It keeps you from participating in life. This program is extremely necessary to the hearing impaired. If you are hard of hearing, many people withdraw from life because we can’t hear conversations and just go into our own world of silence. Please continue to fund this program and those like it to help the hearing impaired to join in life again.”

McGregor supports all that the CHSC does for the community, and for individuals like Allison, so people can stay connected to the world around them.
